Immigrants
Why it's so hard for immigrants to get home loans in the USA
Owning a home is the American dream, and for most people it is something that they are able to do. However for immigrants to the US it is much less likely that they will be able to buy a house. The reason for this is that it is very difficult for immigrants to get a mortgage in the US. There are several reasons for this as the system is not really well designed to help newcomers. There are fairly easy solutions to some of the issues but others are going to be much harder to solve.
The main reason that it is so hard for immigrants to get a home loan in the USA is that in most cases they don't have a credit history. By far the most important thing when it comes to getting a mortgage is your credit, unfortunately this is a problem for a lot of immigrants. That is not to say that they necessarily have bad credit, in fact many of them have excellent credit in the country the emigrated from. The problem is that lenders in the US only check your credit history since you have been living in the USA. That means that most immigrants have little to no credit history which makes it very difficult to get a mortgage.
The simple solution to not having a credit history in the US would be to build one up, unfortunately this is not as easy as it sounds. The problem that you are going to face is that you need to be able to get a loan in order to build your credit history, however without a credit history you will find it difficult to get anybody to lend you money. Most Americans get around this problem by having their parents act as co-signors on a credit card while they are still teenagers, this really isn't an option for most immigrants.
There are some lenders like Aurora Loan Servicing who have recognized the problem and are willing to work with immigrants to help them get the loans that they need.
Another reason that a lot of immigrants have a hard time getting a mortgage is that most of them have to take jobs that don't pay all that well. Since your income is an important factor in qualifying for a mortgage many immigrants run into a problem here. There are good reasons that your income is taken into consideration, the bank wants to make sure that you can make your payments, but knowing this doesn't help much. Really the only thing that you are going to be able to do is to find a way to earn more money. Obviously this is not something that most people can do easily so it is probably the biggest challenge that a lot of immigrants are going to face when they are trying to buy a house.
